Location data

Location catalogue
Country, region and city reference data is provided by the Countries States Cities Database and is used to keep account locations consistent. The dataset is provided under the Open Database Licence (ODbL) v1.0.
What users provide
Account holders select their country and City / Town. ShowCar also stores the region and city-centre latitude/longitude returned by the location catalogue for the selected city.
No signup GPS request
The signup/account location picker does not request the phone or browser's precise GPS coordinates. The administration signup map uses the selected catalogue city's centre point, not a home's exact latitude/longitude.
Network-derived broad location
For QR/NFC scans and advertising statistics, the server may receive broad location headers from the network/hosting layer, such as country, region, city or approximate latitude/longitude. Where those values are unavailable, limited declared account location may be used. ShowCar does not call the device's GPS for this processing.
Admin map and OpenStreetMap
Authorised administrators can view aggregated signup locations on an interactive map. The map uses locally hosted Leaflet software and map tiles from the configured tile provider (OpenStreetMap by default). When an administrator opens the map, that administrator's browser requests map tiles from the provider and therefore sends ordinary connection information such as IP address and browser request data. ShowCar does not send user names or email addresses to the tile provider.
How location is used
Location is used for account/profile context, aggregated signup reporting, QR/NFC scan statistics, regional advertising selection/measurement and administration of the service. It is not used by ShowCar to track a person's live physical movements.
